editor’s note
Business intelligence isn’t new. It’s no longer the hottest buzzword, and it is widely accepted as a
requirement for a successful organization of any size. In fact, organizations have been seeking accessible BI for more than 15 years. In dog and technology years, that’s practically ancient.
It seems like we have been singing this song for years, but perhaps we’re hearing a new melody.
What we’re seeing now goes beyond simple, renewed interest in BI to recognition of the importance of
making sustainable, consistent data-based decisions on a daily basis – by corporate executives and by
workers on the front line. People are realizing the power of delivering data-driven insights throughout
the business.
More people are able to take advantage of these technological developments than ever before.
Justin Norwood and Jeff Deyerle state in the cover story that “a better understanding of advances
in embedded intelligence and predictive analytics are making it possible for analysts and decision-makers to be one and the same.” The challenge, according to the authors, becomes establishing a
company culture that empowers team members to manage information responsibly and make decisions in a uniform manner.
Senior Forrester Analyst Jim Kobielus spoke with us about what embedded analytics mean for BI
and how they are delivering these data-driven insights to transform the decision-making process. See
his interview on page 14.
We may have thought that BI was all grown up, but the future is really arriving for BI and information, and knowledge workers everywhere stand to benefit, if they’re ready.
